EU Considers Response to US Over Greenland
US President Donald Trump recently reaffirmed his long-standing interest in taking control of the autonomous Danish territory, making the remarks shortly after Washington carried out strikes in Venezuela last weekend. Copenhagen has cautioned that Trump must be taken “seriously when he says he wants Greenland.”
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Wednesday that Trump and his administration have been exploring a possible bid to purchase the Arctic island.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Kallas said: “the messages that we hear regarding Greenland are extremely concerning.” She added that European leaders have debated “if this is a real threat, and if it is, what would be our response.”
Although she did not provide details, a media outlet reported that European policymakers are weighing four potential strategies to deter US action. The first involves negotiating a compromise that grants Washington a symbolic security “win” while safeguarding Denmark and Greenland’s sovereignty.
The second option is boosting financial support for Greenland, making closer ties with Europe more appealing than a deal with the US. The third is economic retaliation, and the fourth is deploying troops as a deterrent.
