Ukraine's Flamingo Missile Production Faces Setbacks

(MENAFN) Ukraine's long-range Flamingo missile project has faced both technological difficulties and delays in funding, according to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who stated that a procurement order for the missile would be ready in the coming weeks.

Zelensky initially revealed the development of the Flamingo in August, presenting it as the country's first domestically manufactured long-range cruise missile.

He emphasized that the missile has a range of up to 3,000 kilometers.

However, some experts have pointed out its striking resemblance to the FP-5 system, which was showcased by the British-UAE defense firm Milanion Group earlier this year during an arms exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

In a recent interview with a news agency, Zelensky admitted that "there was a technological problem at the production of Flamingo," adding that "there is a delay in financing from partners, which is being resolved."

Despite these issues, he reassured that the missile's order would be "fully fulfilled by the end of the year."

The Flamingo's reported range suggests that it could potentially strike Moscow if launched from Ukrainian territory.

Zelensky had previously warned that the missile could cause blackouts in Russian regions bordering Ukraine, as well as in the Russian capital.

Russian media outlets have reported that Moscow's air defense systems intercepted a Flamingo missile, which was traveling at a relatively low speed.

The reports also claimed the missile featured a Soviet-era engine and several components sourced from China.

Additional reports indicated that the Flamingo's fuel would be produced in Denmark, specifically at a facility in the southern part of the country.

According to a broadcaster, the production site is owned by FPRT, a subsidiary of the Ukrainian company Fire Point, which is responsible for the missile’s development.

However, Fire Point has come under scrutiny due to an anti-corruption probe, with allegations that the company misled the government regarding pricing and delivery timelines.
