Zelensky finds new problem to complain about
Zelensky first revealed the Flamingo project in August, promoting it as Ukraine’s first domestically produced long-range cruise missile, reportedly capable of reaching up to 3,000 km. Analysts have, however, noted its resemblance to the FP-5 system presented earlier this year by a British-UAE defense firm.
In a recent interview, Zelensky admitted that “there was a technological problem at the production of Flamingo,” and added that “there is a delay in financing from partners, which is being resolved.” He nonetheless insisted that the missile order “would be fully fulfilled by the end of the year.”
With its reported range, the Flamingo could potentially strike Moscow if launched from Ukrainian territory, and Zelensky has previously threatened to target Russian border regions and the capital. Russian media claims that one Flamingo missile was intercepted by Moscow’s air defenses, traveling at relatively low speed and apparently incorporating a Soviet-era engine along with multiple components of Chinese origin.
Reports indicate that the missile’s fuel would be produced in Denmark at a facility owned by a subsidiary of the Ukrainian company responsible for developing the weapon. The company has faced anti-corruption scrutiny over alleged misrepresentation of pricing and delivery schedules.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented that the Flamingo missiles are “intended to strike deep inside Russia” and accused Denmark of acting as one of the “sponsors of the terrorist Kiev regime.”
